A Union prisoner-of-war camp where Angel Eyes operates under a false Confederate identity — a place of systematic suffering that he moves through with professional efficiency.
The POW camp sequence introduces Angel Eyes at his most operational: infiltrating the camp with a false identity, extracting information through torture while an orchestra plays over the screams, and moving on with no expression that registers what he's doing. It is also the scene where Blondie and Tuco end up, swept in by the war, and where the stakes of the Confederate gold plot become real. The camp is not background — it is the Civil War manifested as institutional suffering, and it is where the three men's paths finally converge.
A walled enclosure in the open desert: wooden palisade, guard towers, tents and barracks in the sun. The prisoners are Confederate soldiers, starved and broken. An army band plays at one end — musical cover for the sounds of interrogation coming from another part of the compound. The contrast is deliberate and hideous.
