The Man with No Name's signature garment — a travel-stained woolen poncho that is also, in Fistful, a piece of improvised body armor.
The poncho is a visual signature that the marketing used to create the 'Man with No Name' identity — the same poncho across all three films, the same silhouette, the suggestion of continuity. In Fistful it becomes plot: Blondie layers metal plates under it before the final confrontation, lets Ramon shoot him repeatedly, and then rises from the dust to demonstrate that a man with enough preparation beats a man with a rifle. It is also, simply, a very good poncho for the desert: functional, warm, and loose enough to allow a fast draw.
A rough woolen poncho in tan and brown, fringed at the edges, worn over everything regardless of weather. Perpetually dusty. In A Fistful of Dollars it conceals a metal plate Blondie has welded together to stop Ramon's rifle shots — transforming a costume into a survival strategy.
