The Chasm

Location from Divergent by Veronica Roth

A roaring underground gorge inside the Dauntless compound — beautiful and lethal, where the water drops into darkness and where Al went when he couldn't live with what he'd done.

The Chasm is Dauntless's conscience — the beautiful, terrifying reminder that bravery and recklessness share a border. People come here to think, to dare each other, to be alone with the roar. The bridges that span it are narrow and unguarded because Dauntless doesn't believe in safety rails. It's also where people die. Al jumped. Others have fallen — accidentally or not. Peter hung Tris over the railing here. The Chasm doesn't care about any of it. It just keeps roaring. Dauntless leadership doesn't talk about the Chasm deaths. They're framed as the cost of bravery. Four is one of the few who sees them for what they are: the cost of a system that confuses courage with cruelty.

Appearance

A deep, narrow gorge where an underground river plunges over rocks and disappears into blackness. The water is fast and violent — white foam, deafening roar, spray that soaks the railing-less bridges spanning it. The rock walls are slick and carved smooth by millennia of water. Blue-green light filters up from somewhere deep below. Standing on the bridge, the mist touches your face and the sound swallows your voice.
