Amity Compound

Location from Divergent by Veronica Roth

Orchards and farmland on Chicago's outskirts where peace is the law — enforced, when necessary, by a serum baked into the bread.

Amity smells like earth and bread and growing things. The pace is deliberately slow — no one runs, no one shouts, disagreements are handled in circles where everyone speaks and the group decides together. Music is constant: guitars, singing, humming while working the fields. Physical affection is easy and unselfconscious. It's beautiful and it's also a lie, or at least a managed truth. The bread contains a peace serum that suppresses aggression. Most Amity members know this and accept it as the cost of their chosen life. Some don't know. Johanna oversees the balance between genuine peace and chemically enforced harmony with the careful awareness that one day the distinction might not matter. When the faction war breaks out, Amity becomes a refugee camp. Their gates open because that's who they are — but the strain of housing traumatized, armed people from warring factions tests the peace serum's limits.

Appearance

Rolling green fields, fruit orchards, and low wooden buildings clustered around a central meeting barn. The compound is outside the urban core, closer to the fence, surrounded by cultivated land. Buildings are warm-toned wood and stone with red and yellow accents. Flowers grow everywhere. People work in the fields in loose, comfortable clothes dyed in warm reds and yellows. It looks pastoral, almost idyllic.
