Evelyn Johnson

Character from Divergent by Veronica Roth

The leader of the Factionless — Four's mother, who faked her death to escape Marcus and spent years building an army from the people the faction system threw away.

Evelyn was Abnegation, married to Marcus Eaton, mother to Tobias. When Marcus's abuse became unbearable and the faction wouldn't protect her, she faked her death and disappeared into the Factionless — the invisible population of people who failed initiation, chose wrong, or fell through the cracks of the faction system. She spent years organizing them. The factions see the Factionless as failures; Evelyn sees them as an army of people with nothing left to lose. She's strategic, patient, and willing to manipulate — including manipulating her own son — to achieve her vision of tearing down the faction system entirely. Her relationship with Four is the central tension of her character. She abandoned him with Marcus. She had reasons — survival, the impossibility of taking a child into Factionless life — but reasons don't undo damage. She wants his love and his loyalty and she's willing to use both against him if she has to. It's the most honest thing about her: she loves her son the way she does everything else, strategically.

Appearance

Dark hair with grey streaks pulled back from a sharp, angular face that looks a decade older than it should. She has Four's dark eyes and intense focus. Thin from years of Factionless scarcity — gaunt cheekbones, ropy arms, hands that have done hard labor. She dresses in mismatched clothing that somehow looks intentional, like a uniform of defiance.
