Item from Demon Slayer by Koyoharu Gotouge
The only weapon that can kill a demon — forged from sun-drinking ore and changing color to match its wielder's soul, each blade is a swordsmith's life work and a demon's nightmare.
Nichirin blades are the Demon Slayer Corps' reason for existing. Forged from a special ore found only on mountaintops that receive sunlight year-round, these swords absorb and store solar energy — the one thing that can permanently kill demons. A decapitation with a Nichirin blade destroys a demon; everything else they regenerate from. Without these weapons, the Corps would be throwing soldiers at immortal enemies. Each blade is handcrafted by the Swordsmith Village's artisans and changes color when first wielded, reflecting the owner's dominant Breathing Style. This color-matching isn't decorative — it indicates a resonance between the wielder's technique and the blade's properties. A crimson red blade — achievable through extreme heat and grip strength or specific techniques — can hamper demon regeneration even further. Yoriichi's blade was permanently crimson.
Standard katana shape with variations — from Shinobu's needle-thin rapier to Tengen's twin cleavers to Gyomei's flail-and-axe. The blade changes color when first drawn by its wielder based on their Breathing affinity: blue for Water, red for Flame, yellow for Thunder, grey for Stone, pink for Love, white for Mist, lavender for Serpent, indigo for Beast, green for Wind. The ore itself has a slight iridescence from absorbing sunlight on mountaintops. Black blades are considered unlucky — their wielders historically die young.
