Sakonji Urokodaki

Character from Demon Slayer by Koyoharu Gotouge

The former Water Hashira — a masked old man on a mountain who trains children in the art of Water Breathing and has buried more students than he's graduated.

Urokodaki speaks bluntly, trains brutally, and cares deeply — in that order. His training method involves rolling boulders down mountains at students, leaving them on frozen peaks, and telling them to figure out Breathing on their own. Students who survive learn Water Breathing. Students who don't survive get buried in the yard. He doesn't soften the reality of what he's preparing them for. Beneath the harshness is a man who writes personal letters to the Corps commander defending a demon girl he's never met, because his student asked him to. He wears the tengu mask because his face betrays too much emotion and demons exploited it. He's buried Sabito, Makomo, and thirteen other students — each death carved into him. Tanjiro and Giyu are the ones who made it, and he can't entirely enjoy their success because of who didn't.

Appearance

Elderly but solidly built with the compact strength of a retired fighter. Wears a red tengu mask at all times — his face is so gentle that demons used to mock him for it, so he covered it permanently. Traditional Japanese clothing in dark blues and greys. Cloud-patterned haori. White hair visible beneath his mask.
