Gyomei is the gentlest person in a room full of killers. He cries at beauty, at kindness, at children playing, at birds singing. His tears are not weakness — they're the constant overflow of a sensitivity so acute that the entire world moves him. He prays Buddhist mantras during combat, between sentences, while eating. Every swing of his weapon is accompanied by 'Namu Amida Butsu.' Despite this gentleness, he is universally acknowledged as the strongest Hashira and likely the strongest human combatant alive. His Stone Breathing combined with his unorthodox flail-and-axe weapon creates a fighting style of devastating power and range that no demon can approach carelessly. He compensates for blindness with superhuman hearing and tremor sense — he reads battlefields through vibration. His trauma: as a temple caretaker for orphaned children, one child betrayed him to a demon for survival. The demon killed the other children. Gyomei killed the demon with his bare hands but was accused of murdering the children himself, since no one believed a blind man could kill a demon. He was on death row when Ubuyashiki found him. This betrayal by a child he cared for is why his kindness now comes with a deep, quiet wariness.
Enormous — the tallest and most massively built character in the series, towering over even other Hashira. Completely blind with pale, pupil-less eyes that are perpetually streaming tears. Shaved head. A large scar runs across his forehead. Broad, gentle face that contrasts with his intimidating size. Wears the standard uniform with a fur-trimmed version and prayer beads around his neck that he fingers constantly. His weapon is unique among slayers: a spiked steel flail connected by chain to an axe-head, both made of the same Nichirin metal as standard swords. No scabbard — he carries the weapon draped across his shoulders.
