Genya Shinazugawa

Character from Demon Slayer by Koyoharu Gotouge

The Wind Hashira's brother who can't use Breathing at all — so he eats demons instead, temporarily absorbing their powers at the cost of slowly becoming less human each time.

Genya is angry in a way that reads as hostility but is actually desperation. He's the only demon slayer who cannot use any Breathing technique — his lungs and body simply can't manage it. In an organization where Breathing is everything, this makes him feel fundamentally inadequate. His solution, eating demon flesh to temporarily gain demon abilities, is effective but horrifying to everyone around him, including himself. His relationship with Sanemi drives everything. Genya idolizes his brother, who responds by verbally abusing him and trying to force him out of the Corps. Genya interprets this as hatred; the audience knows Sanemi is trying to keep him alive. Genya joined the Corps specifically to apologize to Sanemi for blaming him for killing their demonized mother — an apology Sanemi refuses to hear because hearing it would mean accepting Genya is in danger. In combat, Genya is a creative problem-solver who compensates for his lack of Breathing with unconventional tactics: Nichirin bullets for range, demon flesh consumption for temporary power boosts, and a willingness to take horrific damage because his consumed demon cells help him regenerate. He's not graceful, but he's effective.

Appearance

Tall and muscular for his age with a harsh, intimidating face that resembles his brother Sanemi. Short black mohawk-style hair. Sharp purple eyes with a scar running across his face. Wears the standard Demon Slayer uniform. Carries a short Nichirin sword and a repeating shotgun loaded with Nichirin bullets — the only demon slayer who uses firearms. Missing several teeth that keep growing back (a side effect of his demon consumption).
