Location from deaths-end by
The gas giant in whose long shadow humanity hides the Bunker World — and the planet whose flattening is the warning the dual-vector foil has reached the inner system.
Jupiter in Death's End is the Bunker Project's shield and the species's chosen sanctuary. The bunker cities are arranged in its lee, calculating that a photoid striking the Sun will be blocked by its bulk. Jupiter's moons are mined for construction; its magnetosphere is mapped and used as cover. When the dual-vector foil collapses 3D to 2D, Jupiter is the largest object the survivors watch fold; it is the moment the Bunker Plan is revealed as moot.
Massive banded sphere of orange and cream, the Great Red Spot a slow eye on its southern hemisphere. From any Bunker city viewport it fills half the sky. Its dozens of moons orbit it like a small solar system. After the dual-vector foil reaches it, it becomes a perfect flat disk hanging in space, banded patterns intact, infinitely thin.
