The third planet — by Death's End, abandoned, then resettled, then evacuated to Bunker World, then folded flat by the dual-vector foil.
Earth is the protagonist's home and the trilogy's victim. In Death's End it cycles through four states: the green tree-city utopia of late Deterrence, the corpse-strewn refugee continent of Post-Deterrence, the museum of late Bunker, and the two-dimensional fresco that ends the book. Each transition is engineered by an outside intelligence; humanity reacts late and badly to each.
By the Deterrence Era, kilometer-tall tree-cities rising out of every continent's coastline, orbital rings catching sunlight overhead. By the Post-Deterrence resettlement, depopulated except for Australia, the cities dim. By the Bunker Era, mostly nature reclaiming concrete; only research stations remain. By the dual-vector foil's arrival, a perfect circular flat painting in two dimensions, hung in the inner Solar System.
