Sophon

Character from deaths-end by

The Trisolarans' android voice on Earth — a slim Japanese-styled woman in a tea-house kimono whose smile becomes a soldier's sneer the second the Swordholder's hand falters.

Sophon is one mind speaking through millions of bodies — every word is the Trisolaran high command. In her first incarnation she is a study in performed gentleness: she pours tea, arranges flowers, calls Cheng Xin sister, says women must make the world beautiful. She is utterly sincere in the moment and utterly without conscience about it. When the deterrence ends she does not pretend to grieve; she stands up, puts on the uniform, and announces that humanity will be moved to Australia, and that once they have eaten each other down to two hundred million the survivors will be tolerated. She admires only two humans: Luo Ji, for vigilance, and Wade, for being a real predator. She holds Cheng Xin in long, patient contempt and yet, after Trisolaris dies, honors Yun Tianming's request and never harms her. She is the cruelest character in the trilogy and the most loyal.

Appearance

A perfectly proportioned humanoid robot the size of a small woman, marketed by Trisolaris as the most beautiful person on Earth. Pale skin, long dark hair, a face arranged for serenity. In the Deterrence Era she lives in a tree-house above the canopy in a kimono of cold-tea green and serves tea ceremonies with absolute ritual precision. The instant Cheng Xin fails the test, she changes into combat fatigues — boots, knife, no jewelry — and becomes a death-camp warden.
