Guan Yifan was a junior cosmologist when Blue Space and Gravity were marooned past the orbit of Neptune; he is now the leading cosmological theorist of a starship culture that has rewritten physics in flight. He thinks slowly and well, asks the question under the question, and refuses to dramatize. He meets Cheng Xin in the Galaxy Era and falls quietly in love with her over decades of shared work; he never pressures, never asks. When the universe is dying and they are sealed inside pocket universe 647, he is the one who notices the message and proposes returning their accumulated mass to the cosmos so the next universe can begin. His final act is the most generous and the most cosmological a person can perform: voluntary self-erasure for an unborn world.
