Shinigami Eyes

Item from Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba

The trade that defines every Kira user's character: half your remaining life for the power to kill anyone on sight.

The Shinigami Eye deal is the Death Note's built-in character test. A shinigami offers: give me half your remaining lifespan, and I'll give you eyes that see every human's real name and remaining life. It's the ultimate shortcut for a Kira — no research needed, just look and write. But the cost is catastrophic. Who takes the deal and who refuses tells you everything. Light refuses — he values his own life too much and believes he can succeed through intelligence alone. Misa takes it twice — she values Light's approval more than her own survival. Soichiro takes it in desperation — willing to sacrifice himself for the truth. Mikami takes it without hesitation — a true believer who considers his life a fair price for divine work. Higuchi takes it for corporate greed. The deal is irreversible. You cannot get the lifespan back. And it halves your REMAINING life — if Misa had 60 years left, her first deal left her with 30, and her second left her with 15.

Appearance

The eyes themselves look normal — no visible change to the user. But when a Shinigami Eye user looks at a human, they see the person's real name and remaining lifespan floating above their head in red text. The numbers count down in real time. Names of Death Note owners appear but their lifespans do not.
