Item from Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba
The video messages that turned a serial killer into a media phenomenon — broadcast on Sakura TV and watched by millions.
The Kira tapes are the series' media commentary made physical. Misa, as the Second Kira, sends video tapes to Sakura TV offering to prove Kira's power and requesting that L show himself. The broadcasts trigger a media firestorm: Kira worship, public debate about justice, and the death of Ukita on the station's steps. Later, Light uses audio-only communications through proxies. The tapes transform Kira from a shadowy killer into a public figure — someone with a message, a philosophy, and followers. The medium IS the message: Kira doesn't need to show his face because the Death Note speaks for itself.
Standard video tapes and audio recordings sent to Sakura TV. The video tapes show a cloaked, disguised figure (Misa as the Second Kira). Later communications are audio-only with digitally altered voices. The presentation is crude but effective — the content matters more than the production quality.
