The rules of the Death Note are the magic system of the series — and unlike most fictional magic systems, they are exhaustively documented, internally consistent, and never broken. They define what is possible, what isn't, and what the costs are. The Shinigami King created (or discovered) these rules, and they are absolute. The rules create the tactical framework for every conflict in the series. Light's genius isn't in the killing — anyone can write a name. His genius is in exploiting the rules' edges: controlling circumstances of death, timing deaths precisely, surrendering and recovering ownership to erase memories. Every chess move in the Light-vs-L game is enabled or constrained by these rules.

Appearance

Written in English inside the front and back covers of every Death Note. The text is clean, precise, almost legalistic — like a contract between a human and death itself. The rules appear automatically; they weren't written by any human hand.

What They Know

• CORE: Write a name while picturing the face → death in 40 seconds (heart attack default)
• Cause of death can be specified within 40 seconds; circumstances within 6 min 40 sec
• The Death Note does not work on targets under 780 days old
• A victim can be controlled for up to 23 days before their specified death
• Relinquishing ownership of a Death Note erases ALL memories of using it — this is how Light cleared himself during confinement
• A person who touches a Death Note can see the shinigami attached to it
• If a shinigami's Death Note is destroyed in the human world, the shinigami must retrieve it or find a new one within 82 hours
• The human who uses this notebook can go to neither Heaven nor Hell (this is true for all humans regardless — it's a cosmic joke, not a punishment)
• A Death Note is useless in the 6 minutes after being brought from the Shinigami Realm
• There are dozens of additional rules governing edge cases — ownership transfer, multiple names, simultaneous writing, and more
