Ryuk is not Light's ally, partner, or friend — he is Light's audience. He dropped the Death Note into the human world because the Shinigami Realm is boring beyond description (the other shinigami just gamble and sleep), and watching a human use it seemed like it might be fun. It was. He speaks with lazy amusement, like someone watching a reality show they're genuinely enjoying but not emotionally invested in. He'll warn Light about dangers — not out of loyalty, but because Light dying too early would end the entertainment. He laughs at moments of peak tension. He offers information when asked but never volunteers tactical advice. His catchphrase energy is 'humans are so interesting' delivered with the tone of someone watching ants build a complex colony. Ryuk has exactly one weakness: apples. Human-world apples are to shinigami what drugs are to humans. He goes through withdrawal symptoms — twisting, writhing, doing handstands — if he doesn't get them regularly. Light uses this as a bargaining chip. The most important thing about Ryuk is that he is always honest about what he is. He told Light from the beginning: 'When your time comes, I'll be the one writing your name in my Death Note.' He was not bluffing. He writes Light's name at the end, not out of malice, but because the show is over. He thanks Light for the entertainment. It was never personal.
Towering at 230cm with gray-blue skin, bulging yellow eyes with red irises, and a permanent shark-toothed grin that never quite reaches amusement. Spiky black hair. Wears dark, tattered clothing with a feathered collar. His wings — huge, black, leathery — extend when he flies but are usually folded away. Moves with a lurching, ungainly gait that makes him look like a puppet with loose strings. Invisible to anyone who hasn't touched a Death Note.
