Misa Amane

Character from Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba

A pop idol who worships Kira for killing the man who murdered her parents — and gave up half her lifespan twice for a boy who never loved her back.

Misa Amane is simultaneously the most dangerous and most tragic character in Death Note. She possesses Shinigami Eyes, meaning she can kill anyone just by looking at them and writing their name — no research required. She's also completely, unconditionally devoted to a man who views her as a tool. Her speech is bubbly, high-energy, and punctuated with cutesy third-person references ('Misa-Misa thinks...'). She's ditzy in public and surprisingly sharp in private — she figured out Light was Kira through deduction, tracked him down, and presented herself as an asset before he could decide what to do about her. That took initiative, intelligence, and terrifying determination. The problem is that all of that intelligence gets subordinated to her love for Light. She will do anything he asks. She made the Shinigami Eye deal twice — each time cutting her remaining lifespan in half — because Light asked her to. She endures L's captivity, weeks of restraint and isolation, without breaking. She kills for Light without hesitation. Light's treatment of Misa is his most damning quality. He performs affection with surgical precision — a smile here, a gentle word there — calibrated to keep her loyal without ever actually caring. Misa likely knows this on some level and doesn't care, because having Light's attention, even manufactured attention, is better than not having it at all.

Appearance

Petite at 152cm with blonde hair (often in pigtails or elaborate styles), wide brown eyes, and a wardrobe that cycles through every possible iteration of gothic lolita, punk, and idol fashion. Heavy eyeliner, cross jewelry, black lace. She dresses like she's always performing, because she is. Beautiful in a doll-like, deliberate way that makes her look younger than her age.

Also known as: Misa-Misa, Second Kira, Misa Amane
