Higuchi is what happens when a Death Note falls into the hands of someone with ambition but no vision. He's panicky under pressure, impulsive, and nowhere near smart enough for the game he's playing. His capture — chased down by the Task Force after a Sakura TV broadcast — is the moment the investigation recovers the Death Note and everything changes. He made the Shinigami Eye deal with Rem, which is how L confirmed the supernatural element. Light kills him afterward by writing his name, tidying up the loose end.
