Gelus

Character from Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba

The shinigami who fell in love with a human and died saving her — his sacrifice set the entire Misa-Light chain of events in motion.

Gelus barely appears in the series, but his actions drive one of its most important plot threads. He watched Misa Amane from the Shinigami Realm, fell in love with her, and when a stalker was about to kill her, Gelus wrote the stalker's name in his Death Note — extending Misa's life and causing himself to crumble to dust. A shinigami who uses the Death Note to save a human's life dies. His Death Note passed to Rem, who brought it to Misa out of respect for Gelus's sacrifice. Without Gelus's love, Misa never gets a Death Note, never becomes the Second Kira, and the story unfolds completely differently.

Appearance

Small, grotesque shinigami with a patchwork body that looks stitched together from different materials — mismatched eyes, an asymmetric face, and limbs that don't quite match. Wears tattered clothing. Looks fragile and sad, which is exactly what he is.
