New York in The Dark Forest is the political backdrop, not a stage of action. Wallfacers arrive at JFK, the Pendulum Monument is moved into the General Assembly plaza, and ETO sleeper agents drift through the diplomatic-quarter cafés. The city becomes the place where humanity still holds its formal council despite knowing the formality is a charade.
The familiar skyline of the early twenty-first century: the spire of the Empire State, the bulk of the UN tower, the long shimmer of the East River, yellow taxis on the avenues. Snow in winter. Steam from the manholes. By Book 2's later chapters, post-Crisis New York is partly drained of population and the avenues stand quieter than the period photos.
