Stellar-class flagship of the Asian Fleet's 3rd Squadron, fifteen hundred meters long — stolen by Zhang Beihai out of the Doomsday Battle and turned into a seed-ship of the species.

Natural Selection is the largest warship humanity ever built, and it spends Book 2 as both a symbol and a getaway car. Dongfang Yanxu commands her with proper Asian Fleet doctrine; Zhang Beihai takes her by ruse and acceleration on the eve of the Doomsday Battle. After the catastrophe she becomes the lead vessel of Starship Earth, on a two-thousand-year voyage to NH558J2 — until the Battle of Darkness destroys her along with three of her sisters.

Appearance

A long, pale, cylindrical warship 1,500 meters from bow to engines, twelve hundred crew, fusion drive plumes the color of welding flame. Spinal weapon ridges. Forward observation blisters. Inside: long cylindrical galleries, deep-sea acceleration tanks, the captain's bridge raised behind a glass arc.
