Luo Ji's Lakeside Villa

Location from dark-forest by

A walled estate in Northern Europe requisitioned for Luo Ji as part of his Wallfacer privileges — a private Eden built around a lake, a vineyard, and a single absent dream.

The villa was supposed to be a hideout for a man Earth could not afford to lose. Under Luo Ji it became a court of one — staff who answered to him, security in the trees, a dream-girl chosen for him out of the population of China. The lake is where Frederick Tyler walks into the water with a pistol; the stone path between the dock and the boathouse is where Luo Ji proposes to Zhuang Yan; the front gate is where Da Shi smokes when he is angry. After the family enters hibernation the villa becomes simply a house Luo Ji wanders alone, drinking and waiting for the world to ask the right question.

Appearance

A long, low villa of pale stone with timber eaves, standing at the curve of a glacial lake. Vineyards on the south slope, pine forest behind, a long boathouse and dock. Inside: warm wood, fireplaces, paintings selected to please an unidentified woman, a wine cellar that smells like cedar and old corks. In winter the lake freezes black at the edges.
