The volume of space between Jupiter and Saturn where humanity assembled two thousand stellar-class warships to greet a single droplet — and where they died in fifteen minutes.
The fleet position was meant to be a parade ground. Twenty rows of one hundred ships, fifteen outliers, drives idled — the human species's largest display of strength, gathered to receive what the Princeps had announced as a peace probe. After the droplet's first acceleration the position became a debris field. After the battle, the same coordinates became a memorial that nobody could afford to maintain.
A staggered rectangular formation of sleek, mile-long warships in the cold black between two gas giants. Drive flares glittering like distant lighters in a stadium. The droplet at the center: a single mirror-bright teardrop, three meters long, hanging perfectly still.
