Capital of China in the early Crisis Era — Luo Ji's original home, Yang Dong's grave, Da Shi's beat, and the city the Wallfacer apparatus drags him out of.
Beijing is the city where the book starts: where Luo Ji teaches, where Ye Wenjie comes to her daughter's grave, where the cosmic-sociology axioms are first spoken aloud over a flask in the snow. It is also the city Da Shi works out of — knowing every corrupt back office and every honest one. The city itself does not change much across the book; the people in it become temporally displaced as hibernation thins them out.
The familiar contemporary city: ring roads, smog haze on the southern horizon, Soviet-era ministry blocks beside glass towers. Tsinghua's gray-tile campus to the north. The small cemetery where Yang Dong is buried lies on the city's outskirts, willow trees over modest stones.
