Crisis-era hibernation began as a hospice technology for terminal patients and was militarized within a decade. By Book 2 it is the standard tool for skipping the Crisis: Wallfacers, defeatists, escapists, hostage-spouses and reservist officers all use it. Long-duration sleepers wake to a world that no longer remembers them. Cycles are pre-set in fifty-year increments with manual revival overrides.
Coffin-sized pod-units of brushed steel and chilled glass, plumbed with cooling coils and life-support feeds. Inside the pod, the sleeper floats in a thick clear gel at subzero temperatures, breathing tubes installed, eyes closed. External readouts pulse blue.
