Xia Xia barely speaks in the book, but she is the gravity that bends Luo Ji's orbit. The decision to send her into long hibernation with her mother is what converts Luo Ji from a man enjoying his sentence to a man serving one. Around her, Luo Ji is uncharacteristically tender; in her absence, he is unbearable to everyone, including himself.
