Da Shi solves problems by being the largest, calmest object in the room. He insults scientists for fun, calls his charges 'kid' regardless of their rank, and produces solutions that turn out to be obvious only after he says them. He has no patience for cosmology and infinite patience for human stupidity. Around Luo Ji he plays the bad cop, the friend, and occasionally the father, switching between them faster than Luo Ji can track. He hibernates so he can keep Luo Ji alive on the other side. He has buried more colleagues than he will admit and will not be the one to bury Luo Ji.

After hibernation he looks the same age — late forties, broken nose, half a smile — but moves more carefully, as if the future were something fragile he might step on.
