Luo Ji starts as a coward and a charmer. He treats the Wallfacer appointment as a license to be insufferable: a Northern European villa, a curated dream-girl, a cellar of wine. He is funny, observant, and ashamed of nothing because he was never asked for anything. The shame arrives only when Zhuang Yan does — the dream made real makes him want to be worth her. After the snow grave, the spell, and waking from hibernation into a contemptuous post-Crisis world, he becomes quieter and crueler in a still, polite way. He talks to the Trisolarans as a man already dead bargaining for his species. He does not pretend to enjoy power. He holds the sword.
Mid-thirties at the Crisis's start: lean, slightly rumpled, with the sallow look of a man who drinks during the day and sleeps in his clothes. Wears suits provided by his Wallfacer staff badly. After hibernation he wakes a hundred years later still looking thirty-five among elders — gaunt, gray at the temples by the end, eyes that do not quite focus on the people in front of him.
