Ding Yi treats grief and physics as the same problem: things that happened to him without his consent. He is dryly funny, prone to billiards metaphors, and the only one of the first-contact party who appears to genuinely want the droplet to be a peace offering. When it is not, he stays at the table. He goes to the Doomsday Battle expecting to die and is therefore the only delegate who is calm.
