Van Richten's Tower

Location from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast

A crumbling tower on the shores of Lake Baratok that Van Richten uses as a secret base — trapped to self-destruct if his enemies find it.

Van Richten's Tower stands on the shore of Lake Baratok, a crumbling stone structure that looks abandoned. It is not. Van Richten has been using it as a base of operations — storing research, weapons, and supplies for his campaign against Strahd. The tower is rigged with traps, including an anti-magic field on the door and a lightning-based defense system. Ezmerelda's wagon is parked outside, also trapped. The tower is one of the few places in Barovia where someone might find concentrated anti-vampire resources — holy water, silvered weapons, detailed research on Strahd's capabilities and weaknesses. It is also one of the few places where Van Richten and Ezmerelda might encounter each other, leading to a complicated reunion.

Also known as: Van Richten's Tower, the tower on Lake Baratok, the old tower
