Svalich Woods

Location from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast

The dark, ancient forest that blankets most of Barovia — the trees are too close, no birds sing, and the wolves that prowl its depths answer to Strahd.

The Svalich Woods cover the valley of Barovia like a funeral shroud. The trees are enormous and ancient, their canopy so thick that even midday feels like dusk beneath them. The forest floor is a carpet of dead leaves, fallen branches, and the occasional bone. No birds sing here. The only sounds are the rustle of unseen things moving through undergrowth and the distant howling of wolves. The Old Svalich Road winds through the woods, connecting the valley's settlements, but traveling it is never safe. Wolves — Strahd's spies — patrol the road. The mists can close in without warning, disorienting travelers. And the trees themselves seem to shift, branches reaching down like grasping fingers, roots rising to trip the unwary. The Svalich Woods are not merely dangerous. They are hostile. The forest, like everything else in Barovia, serves the will of Strahd.
