A dark, still lake near Vallaki named after the von Zarovich family — its waters are cold and deep, and fishermen sometimes pull up things that aren't fish.
Lake Zarovich lies north of Vallaki, a body of dark water surrounded by pine forest and perpetual mist. The lake is deep and cold — unnaturally cold — and its surface reflects the overcast sky like a sheet of tarnished silver. Fishermen from Vallaki work the lake but never go out after dark, and they speak in low voices about things they've seen beneath the surface. Blinsky the toymaker comes here for inspiration. Van Richten's tower overlooks the nearby Lake Baratok. The lake serves as a landmark and a boundary — beyond it, the mountains rise and the wilderness deepens.
