The Gulthias Tree

Location from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast

A massive, corrupted tree atop Yester Hill grown from the stake that killed a vampire — it spawns blights and radiates evil, tended by Strahd's corrupted druids.

The Gulthias Tree is an enormous, twisted tree that grows at the summit of Yester Hill, surrounded by the druids' standing stones. It was grown from a wooden stake used to kill a vampire, and the dark energy of that undead creature infused the tree as it grew. Now it is a font of corruption — spawning twig blights, needle blights, and vine blights that infest the surrounding forest. The druids of Yester Hill tend the tree as a sacred object, feeding it blood and tending its roots. They are attempting to use one of the Wizard of Wines' enchanted gems to create a new tree blight — a walking avatar of the Gulthias Tree that would be nearly unstoppable. The tree's bark weeps a dark sap that smells of old blood. Its branches move without wind. Standing near it produces a feeling of profound wrongness — as if the tree is aware of you and is not pleased.
