Ruins of Berez

Location from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast

A drowned village in the marshes of the Luna River — destroyed by Baba Lysaga after a woman there reminded Strahd of Tatyana, now a haunted swamp filled with scarecrows and undead.

Berez was once a thriving village on the Luna River. Then a woman named Marina was born there who bore an uncanny resemblance to Tatyana. Strahd noticed. Baba Lysaga noticed Strahd noticing. When the village priest killed Marina to protect her from the vampire, Baba Lysaga destroyed the entire village in rage — flooding it, corrupting the land, turning it into the fetid swamp it is today. Now Berez is a drowned ruin. Crumbling buildings rise from brackish water. Scarecrows stand in fields of mud, animated by Baba Lysaga's magic, waiting for intruders. The hag's creeping hut stalks through the swamp on gnarled roots. Marina's monument — a stone marker commemorating the dead woman — stands half-submerged, a reminder of the cycle that will never end. Berez smells of rot, stagnant water, and old death. It is one of the most oppressive locations in Barovia.
