Location from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast
A dying village huddled in the shadow of Castle Ravenloft — its people are broken, its streets are empty, and the sound of weeping carries on the wind.
The village of Barovia is where hope comes to die. It sits at the eastern edge of the valley, directly beneath the cliff on which Castle Ravenloft perches, and Strahd's shadow falls over it both literally and figuratively. Most of the buildings are dark and boarded up. The few residents who remain are hollow-eyed and fearful, moving between their homes and Bildrath's Mercantile in desperate, hurried shuffles. The streets smell of mud, old smoke, and something sour. The Blood of the Vine tavern is the only gathering place, and even it feels like a wake. The church stands at the village's edge, its bell silent, a terrible howling occasionally rising from beneath its floor. Mad Mary's wailing echoes from her boarded-up house at all hours. The burgomaster's mansion is barricaded, its occupants — Ismark and Ireena — trapped between grief and terror. This village is the first taste of what Barovia offers: despair without bottom, beauty long decayed, and the persistent feeling of being watched from above.
