Item from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast
Madam Eva's fortune-telling cards — the reading she performs with them determines the locations of the three treasures and identifies a destined ally against Strahd.
The Tarokka deck is a set of illustrated cards used by the Vistani for fortune telling, and in Madam Eva's hands, they become instruments of genuine prophecy. The deck consists of the common deck (suits of stars, coins, swords, and glyphs) and the high deck (powerful, named cards). The reading Madam Eva performs is the mechanical heart of Curse of Strahd's replayability. Five cards are drawn: three determine where the Sunsword, Holy Symbol of Ravenkind, and Tome of Strahd are hidden. A fourth identifies a destined ally — an NPC who will fight alongside the adventurers in the final confrontation. The fifth reveals the location where Strahd can be found for the climactic battle. Every playthrough of Curse of Strahd is different because of the Tarokka reading. The same adventure becomes a different experience depending on where fate places the treasures and who fate designates as the party's champion.
