Item from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast
A legendary sword that emits sunlight — Strahd's most feared weapon, believed destroyed but hidden somewhere in Barovia, its location revealed by the Tarokka reading.
The Sunsword is a sentient crystal blade that emits brilliant sunlight when activated — true sunlight, not an imitation, making it one of the most devastating weapons against vampires ever created. Strahd destroyed the blade centuries ago, or so he believes. In truth, the blade's hilt survived, and it can be restored. The Sunsword was forged to fight darkness, and it carries a personality to match — eager, righteous, and hungry for undead. When wielded against Strahd, it strips away his regeneration and causes him genuine pain. It is the weapon the Dark Powers have allowed to persist, perhaps because even they enjoy watching Strahd face something he truly fears. Its location in any given campaign is determined by Madam Eva's Tarokka reading. The card drawn determines where the Sunsword can be found — it might be in Castle Ravenloft's crypts, in Van Richten's tower, in the Amber Temple, or elsewhere. This variability is one of Curse of Strahd's signature design elements.
