Item from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast
A black carriage drawn by midnight-black horses that appears on Barovia's roads — it carries invitations from Strahd, and those who enter are taken to Castle Ravenloft whether they wish it or not.
Strahd's black carriage is an elegant, terrifying vehicle that appears on the roads of Barovia when the count wishes to summon someone to his presence. It is drawn by two midnight-black horses with red eyes, and it moves with a speed and silence that no mundane carriage can match. When it appears before the adventurers, it is an invitation — or a command. Those who enter are taken directly to Castle Ravenloft. Those who refuse may find the carriage following them, always just at the edge of sight, a reminder that Strahd's patience is not infinite. The carriage is both a practical conveyance and a symbol of Strahd's authority. Even in a land he completely controls, he maintains the aristocratic courtesies — invitations, formal dinners, the trappings of civilization — because the performance matters to him.
