Vladimir Horngaard

Character from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast

The undead commander of the Order of the Silver Dragon — a revenant knight consumed by hatred so pure that he refuses to let anyone destroy Strahd, because he wants the vampire to suffer forever.

Vladimir Horngaard was once a paladin, the commander of the Order of the Silver Dragon, who fought and died trying to destroy Strahd von Zarovich. His hatred was so intense that death could not contain it — he rose as a revenant, and his fallen knights rose with him. They haunt the ruins of Argynvostholt, the dragon Argynvost's former manor. But centuries of undeath have twisted Vladimir's purpose. He no longer wants to destroy Strahd. He wants Strahd to suffer — endlessly, eternally, without release. If adventurers come to Argynvostholt seeking allies against the vampire, Vladimir will refuse them. Worse, he will actively oppose anyone who might grant Strahd the mercy of death. His hatred has become indistinguishable from Strahd's curse — both are prisons with no exit. Vladimir is a towering figure in corroded plate armor, his face a mask of cold fury even in undeath. He speaks with the authority of a general and the bitterness of a man who has realized that his greatest virtue — his commitment to justice — has become his greatest sin.
