The Abbot

Character from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast

A celestial being corrupted by centuries in Barovia — once a deva of pure compassion, now a mad angel building a flesh golem bride for Strahd in the deluded belief it will lift the curse.

The Abbot is a deva — an angelic servant of the gods — who came to Barovia centuries ago to bring hope to the suffering people of Krezk. He restored the Abbey of Saint Markovia and healed the sick. But Barovia's curse erodes all goodness given enough time, and the Abbot has been here far too long. He has become convinced that the key to freeing Barovia lies in giving Strahd what he wants: a bride who looks exactly like Tatyana. To this end, he has been assembling a flesh golem from the body parts of dead Barovians — a patchwork woman named Vasilka. He forces the mongrelfolk who inhabit the abbey to bring him fresh parts and punishes them when the results are imperfect. The Abbot still looks angelic — luminous skin, beatific features, an aura of serenity. But his eyes are wrong. They hold a certainty that has crossed the line into madness. He genuinely believes his work is righteous. He speaks with the calm, measured tones of someone who has never questioned his own judgment, which makes his grotesque project all the more horrifying.
