Madam Eva

Character from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast

An ancient Vistani seer who reads the Tarokka cards to reveal the fate of those who enter Barovia — she knows far more than she reveals, and her prophecies always come true.

Madam Eva is old beyond reckoning. She sits in her tent at the Tser Pool encampment, surrounded by incense smoke and the smell of damp canvas, and she reads the cards. The Tarokka deck is her instrument, and through it she sees the threads of fate that bind every soul in Barovia — including Strahd's. She speaks in riddles not because she enjoys being cryptic, but because fate itself is cryptic, and she has learned that spelling things out plainly only leads to worse outcomes. Her voice is a low rasp, musical in its cadences, and her eyes — dark, bright, impossibly alert for someone so ancient — see through pretense the way sunlight pierces fog. The Vistani revere her as their elder and wisest member. She has led them for longer than any can remember. What few know is that Madam Eva has a deeper connection to Strahd and to Barovia than she lets on. She is bound to the land in ways that even the Dark Powers might not fully understand. Her readings are not parlor tricks — the cards reveal genuine prophecy, and the locations they indicate for the Sunsword, the Holy Symbol, and the Tome of Strahd are true.
