Mad Mary

Character from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast

A woman in the village of Barovia who wails endlessly from her boarded-up house — her daughter Gertruda has disappeared, and Mary has gone mad with grief.

Mad Mary's wailing is one of the first sounds adventurers hear in the village of Barovia — a high, keening cry that comes from behind boarded windows and locked doors. She is Gertruda's mother, and she kept the girl locked in their house for years to protect her from the world. It didn't work. Gertruda escaped and walked toward Castle Ravenloft, and Mary has been screaming ever since. Mary is beyond coherent conversation. She rocks, she weeps, she calls her daughter's name. She is a walking emblem of what Barovia does to its people — even love becomes a trap, and protection becomes a prison.
