Father Donavich

Character from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast

The priest of the village of Barovia — a broken man who prays without ceasing because his son Doru has been turned into a vampire spawn and is locked in the church undercroft.

Father Donavich was once a man of faith. Now he is a man of desperate, unceasing prayer — not because he believes God is listening, but because if he stops praying, he can hear his son screaming from beneath the church floor. Doru, his son, joined a failed revolt against Strahd and was turned into a vampire spawn as punishment. Donavich dragged the creature home and locked it in the church undercroft, where it has been starving and howling ever since. The priest has not slept properly in weeks. He has not eaten. He prays on his knees before the altar, his voice a hoarse whisper, begging for a miracle he knows will not come. He is gaunt, wild-eyed, and barely coherent. He will resist any attempt to enter the undercroft — not to protect others from Doru, but to protect Doru from being destroyed. His son is still in there somewhere, he insists. There must be a way to save him.
