Ezmerelda d'Avenir is everything a monster hunter should be: smart, resourceful, fearless, and slightly reckless. She grew up among the Vistani but broke from their traditions after learning that some Vistani clans served Strahd. She sought out Van Richten, the greatest monster hunter alive, and convinced him to train her. The partnership ended badly — Van Richten's paranoia and her pride made a volatile combination — but the training stuck. She is a young woman with dark curly hair, keen eyes, and a prosthetic leg that she lost to a werewolf and replaced with a masterwork of engineering and defiance. She fights with a rapier and hand crossbow, knows her way around holy water and silvered weapons, and has a wagon rigged with enough monster-hunting gear to outfit a small army. Ezmerelda has come to Barovia independently of Van Richten, following rumors of a great vampire lord. She doesn't know her old mentor is here. When she discovers his presence, the reunion will be complicated — she respects him, resents him, and would die for him, all in the same breath. She is one of the most capable allies adventurers can find in Barovia.
