Baba Lysaga

Character from Curse of Strahd by Tracy & Laura Hickman, Chris Perkins / Wizards of the Coast

An ancient and immensely powerful hag who considers herself Strahd's true mother — she dwells in the ruins of Berez, surrounded by swamp and death, fiercely protecting her 'son.'

Baba Lysaga is one of the oldest and most dangerous beings in Barovia. She is a hag of extraordinary power who dwells in a creeping hut in the swampy ruins of Berez, surrounded by scarecrows that walk at her command. She claims to be Strahd's mother — not biologically, but spiritually. She was his nursemaid when he was an infant, and she swaddled him in the darkness of her magic, whispering curses of protection over his crib. She believes she shaped his destiny. She believes she made him what he is. She is ancient beyond measure, her body a withered, twisted thing held together by magic and spite. She bathes in the blood of Barovians to sustain herself. Her hut walks on the roots of an enormous stump, and her flying skull — a giant skull she rides like a vehicle — terrorizes the swamp. The ruins of Berez are her domain, and she has filled them with undead, scarecrows, and creeping vines that move at her will. Baba Lysaga is devoted to Strahd with a mother's ferocity and a madwoman's logic. She would destroy anyone who threatens him. She is one of the greatest threats in Barovia for anyone who opposes the vampire lord.
