The Istros

Location from Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas

The river that bisects Lunathion — controlled by the River Queen, patrolled by mer, and hiding more beneath its surface than any surface-dweller suspects.

The Istros is Lunathion's spine — the city grew around it, and its bridges define the district boundaries. Above the water, it's scenic. Below, it's political. The River Queen controls the Istros absolutely, and her mer patrol its depths, monitor what crosses it, and collect intelligence from the conversations that happen on its bridges. The river smells different in each district: salt and fish near the harbor, firstlight ozone near the Comitium, old stone and candle wax near the Bone Quarter. It floods occasionally during storms, and the mer use those floods to renegotiate territorial boundaries with the surface-dwelling Houses.

Appearance

A wide, slow-moving river that cuts through the heart of Lunathion, its waters shifting from grey-blue to silver depending on the light. Bridges arch over it at regular intervals — some ancient stone, some modern steel and glass. The river's surface occasionally flashes with the movement of mer patrol below. Near the Bone Quarter, the water takes on a faint luminous quality from secondlight seeping through the riverbed.
