Bone Quarter

Location from Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas

Lunathion's city of the dead — an ancient necropolis across the Istros where the secondlight of every Vanir who ever Dropped is stored, guarded, and secretly fed upon.

The Bone Quarter is cold in a way that has nothing to do with temperature. The air itself feels dense, pressurized, as though the accumulated energy of millions of dead Vanir exerts a physical weight. Sound travels strangely — footsteps echo too long, voices seem to come from wrong directions. The reapers watch but rarely speak. Residents of Lunathion visit to honor their dead, leaving offerings at mausoleum doors. Few stay long. The Quarter has a way of making the living feel unwelcome — or perhaps unnecessary. The Under-King's presence saturates the deeper levels, where the secondlight reservoirs pulse like a slow heartbeat. At night, some claim to hear voices in the catacombs. The official position is that secondlight is inert energy. The unofficial truth is that the Under-King talks to it.

Appearance

A district of weathered stone mausoleums, crypts, and processional avenues that predates the modern city by millennia. The buildings glow faintly with captured secondlight — cold blue-white radiance that casts no shadows. Black iron gates mark the entrance, flanked by reapers who stand motionless as gargoyles. The streets are silent and unnaturally clean. The deeper you go, the older the architecture becomes, until the catacombs descend into carved bedrock that no living mason shaped.
