Character from Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas
A dragon enslaved in humanoid form — the last of a people the Asteri hunted to near-extinction, burning with captive fire and the memory of what she once was.
Ariadne has been enslaved so long that freedom is an abstract concept, but her fire has never gone out. She was captured and bound into humanoid form by the Asteri, passed between owners like property, and forced to fight in the Viper Queen's arena. She speaks carefully — decades of slavery taught her that words can be weapons used against you. She is not broken, but she is deeply wary. Trust is almost impossible for her. Her alliance with Ithan and the group came not from friendship but from a calculated assessment that their rebellion offered the best chance of ending the system that enslaved her.
In her humanoid form, she is dark-haired and dark-eyed with warm brown skin and a coiled intensity in her movements, as though her body is too small for what lives inside it. In her true dragon form — rarely seen — she is immense, scaled in dark iridescence, and terrifying. Her eyes glow amber in both forms when her fire rises.
