The Blackflame Empire was once a regional power built on the destructive Blackflame Path — a sacred arts tradition so dangerous it drove its practitioners mad. The original Blackflame family is extinct, consumed by their own madra, and the current empire is run by the Naru clan using wind-path techniques. The name persists because changing it would be politically inconvenient. The empire survives in a world of Monarchs by being useful without being threatening. It hosts sacred artists, maintains trade routes, and provides a buffer zone between larger factions. It's where Lindon spent his formative years outside Sacred Valley, advancing from Gold to Underlord while the empire's own politics provided obstacles and opportunities in equal measure.
Sprawling lowlands and river valleys between mountain ranges, with cities built around aura wellsprings. Architecture mixes practical stone fortifications with the remnants of grander Blackflame-era construction — dragon motifs carved into older buildings, walls scorched by ancient Blackflame techniques. The territory is well-irrigated and agriculturally productive, supporting a population that ranges from Foundation civilians to the occasional Underlord.
